CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

It’s the day of the interview and I’m feeling nervous, the news about Llewellyn Chance having made me feel weirdly exposed and vulnerable – if it’s not him, then who is it? I had almost convinced myself it was him, so to hear there is no possible way he could have anything to do with it makes me feel even more worried. It’s been months since I actually put myself out there and went to interview someone in person, and that, combined with the news, makes me feel even more jumpy than usual. I drop Henry at school, rushing back to get myself ready for the journey into town. Back at home I pull on soft-grey trousers, with a deep-red cashmere jumper, an outfit left over from my pregnancy with Henry, but one that is comfortable and suitable for work. I dig out my black boots with the small heel, knowing my feet will be killing me by the end of the day, and yank open the wardrobe doors to find what Henry calls my ‘posh’ coat. I rattle through the hangers, but no coat. Pushing them all back towards the front, I go through more slowly, inspecting each item before moving it, checking the coat hasn’t fallen off it’s hanger and down behind the other clothes. I reach the end and still no coat. A thought flickers across my mind, the idea that Lila is wearing a very similar coat to mine lately, and I push it away. Lila’s my friend; she wouldn’t steal my coat. It’s madness to think someone would steal a coat. I shake my head at myself, tutting under my breath. Anyway, she hasn’t ever been upstairs, apart from to tuck Henry in. It’s more likely it either got lost in the house move, or that Mark took it to the dry cleaner’s and forgot to tell me. Swishing through the hangers for the third time, I dig out a half-decent black jacket – it won’t be warm enough, but there’s no way I can turn up in my usual battered old coat. Winding a thick grey scarf round my neck, I grab my bag and head for the tube station. There’s still no sign of my mobile, so I’ve asked the school to contact my mum if they need to for any reason. For the first time in ages I feel a bit more like my old self – it must be the idea of doing what feels like a proper day’s work.

Arriving at the restaurant where the interview is to take place, I see that my interviewee has already arrived, and is seated at the table with a large glass of wine in front of him, despite the fact it’s only just lunchtime. I introduce myself and allow the waiter to lead me over to the table, only spying Belinda sitting next to the soap star at the last minute. She gets to her feet, plucking her coat from the chair behind her.
